Uttarakhand-Flash Floods-Lessons Learnt

Quite disturbing news coming from up north, the melting of an Iceberg in Uttarakhand has caused widespread damage to both life and property. It has now been estimated  that more than 120 lives have been lost.

While these are all clear signs of global warming, mother nature is constantly sending us warnings that if we do not mend our ways then widespread destruction  is the only way human race can learn a lesson. Yesterday the flash floods caused have inflicted damage that is a clear reminder to something worse that might happen in the  foreseeable future.

What is very worrying is the fact that this incident has happened while the winter has not even receded. Scientists across the world are studying the phenomenon of global warming.  rising temperatures across the planet clearly indicate the need  for drastic steps in all our actions.

A few steps that we can definitely take and mitigate the losses due to the phenomenon global warming have been discussed below:

1.  The Awareness of global warming needs to be  made up priority across educational institutions schools,  colleges and the corporate world. We need to encourage,  the student community to come up with innovative methodologies of encountering the threats of global warming.

2.  Governments both Central and regional need to take action to implement an accepted policy that will clearly underline steps that will push back global warming.

3.  Sustained online campaigns  be undertaken by private sector in order to educate people about  global warming and how it is harming our planet. I would suggest that even celebrities take up the cause.

4.  Technology has been a great enabler  in the last few years.  I would suggest the formation of online study groups on platforms like Facebook where people can come together and discuss global warming.  I am sure that these groups are prevalent but would help if there are more such groups.

5.  Government subsidy for green buildings will ensure that more Corporates take up the responsibility with greater zeal and enthusiasm.

6.   The Go Green campaign  means more awareness at all levels.  schools and colleges can be encouraged to plant more trees. Citizens localities and societies must take up the  cause of greenery. Cutting of trees must be strictly avoided and strict penalties have to be in place for those  who indulge  in destroying trees.

7.  A clear policy needs to be established  on real estate.  buildings cannot be allowed to come up on agricultural land.  lush greenery should be of prime importance,  rather than concrete jungles.

The governments of the world needs to take up the fight against global warming on a war footing. Mother Nature serves warnings from time to time, weather we  heed it or not lies only in our hands.  We can choose to leave a safer planet for the generations to come or ignore these kind of natural disasters. Lets all remember that the Himalayas is melting each day Inch By Inch. Clearly the time is ticking. Could be one day that the Gangetic plains become a watershed moment truly and quite literally. it's all in our hands Now or Never.
