When Politics lost its Spirit in Tamil Nadu

For the citizens of Tamil Nadu its gone down to a level where we have had no governance ever since the Iron Lady Jayalalitha passed away without announcing a successor, leaving a void that will never be filled up. On expected lines AIADMK has split up, leading to an open war between OPS and the mistress in prison Sasikala. In between Sasikala has managed to squeeze in her proxy before she landed behind bars. Now there are several pointers that I would like to highlight, I beg to think differently:

1. In such a situation, why cant we have a public referendum to decide who gets to rule the state. In a democracy where people have say, why not allow them to decide to ensure that the right to rule and the licence to power remains in right hands till the conduct of the next elections. This way we can ensure that power mongers are kept at bay.

2. We have managed the show without practically no governance. So be it. the law in the hands of the Police and the judiciary. There are state government offices that function as usual. IAS/IPS officers on duty. Healthcare officials ensure that the Hospitals are taken care. Why at all have power crazy spineless leaders who are controlled by remote from prison, controlled by a person who has been pronounced guilty and is serving a sentence. Why cant we go in for Presidents rule?

3. EC needs to look at the election rules once again: We in Tamil Nadu have been clearly swayed by freebie culture. We are so deep in this culture that Politicos know that if they extend a few freebies that will ensure the keys to the corridors of power. EC needs to ensure that elections are fought on fair grounds. Let the candidates talk about development, infrastructure, education, healthcare, jobs and other public utility services.

4. Once a person gets into criminal records there should be a lifetime ban on that person from entering politics or holding important government posts. We cannot be halfway when it comes to issues like corruption and crime. When we want to weed out corruption from the society we have to weed it out at the root levels.

5. I am sure that there is enough and more leadership talent that is available in civil society. Why cant we create a system just to ensure that democracy is really about voices of the people being heard and not for those who enter politics as agents or power mongers.

Today we feel helpless in Tamil Nadu. its reached a situation where perhaps the common man has given up hope. The run of play seems to be in the favor of the corrupt as of now, for how long is the question???
