Cricket and Rio2016

Today is indeed an auspicious day, for it happens to be my mothers 76th birthday. Lucky and Blessed are those who are under the loving shelter of their Parents. I am singularly fortunate that way. As I begin to write this blog, I also have this deep fear within me. People say that I am blessed with an inherent talent to write, but somehow the continuity does not seem to last. I hope and pray that this writing spree continues to burn in me for a longer period of time.

There are two things that I wish to write about today, One Cricket and the other the Rio Olympics. let me first begin with the Gentlemans Game-Cricket. Even as India Tours West Indies, I am taken back to the 70's when legends like Greenidge,Haynes, Garner, Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Malcom Marshall, Vivian Richards,Clive Llyod used to reign supreme over the world of cricket. There would be jeers from the Crowd "Get Him Maaan" and even "Hit Him Maaaan" . Players would lose their sleep over having to face the pace bowling battery from the West Indies. Players would have no clue on how to deal with the mean men and their meaner pace bowling. Pitches were always green and fearsome. The name Barbados evoked fear. All this till a certain gem of a Cricketer appeared on the scene called Sunil Manohar Gavaskar and decided to unravel the secrets to handle pace bowling that too without wearing an Helmet. It is therefore sad that the cricket in the Windies has dropped down to such levels, that the weather has to intervene to save the Caribbean team from certain defeat. However all that is gone and perhaps never to return back to its past fearsome best.

The other thing is worrying is the Games village at Rio. Players are supposed to be at their very best to perform at that level. However, the facilities provided to the athletes are as per hearsay sub-standard. Players are complaining about contaminated water and poor living conditions. How did the IOC miss this one? Was there no statutory check ahead of the Games. Bacteria in water will sure send a fear up the spines of the international community. Brazil has been going through the worst of times and a financial crisis that is pulling them down. At this time was it necessary for the IOC to have handed over the responsibility of hosting the 2016 Games to Rio, Defies all Logic. Over and above all this, the fear of Terror has been stalking the games. Will the security officers be up to the task and provide for adequate security Cover for the players and the spectators. I definitely hope and am keeping my fingers crossed.
